    What Is SPT Sampler

     

    The SPT sampler is an in-situ testing method used in the field of geotechnical investigations to obtain a soil sample by driving a penetrator at the bottom of an auger rod into the soil at the bottom of a borehole using an SPT hammer. This test method is known as the Standard Penetration Test (SPT), where the number of hammer strokes required to penetrate 300 mm (1 ft) is called the Standard Penetration Strike (N-value), which relates to the strength of the soil. However, when different types of SPT hammers are used for testing, different hammering efficiencies affect the value of the N-value. In order to solve this problem, PDI (USA) has developed the Standard Penetration Test Analyzer, which determines the converted energy of the hammer blow by measuring the force and velocity values during the hammer blow in the test. This analyzer measures the ratio between the actual energy transferred to the drill pipe by the hammer blow and 60% of the theoretical potential energy, and then multiplies it with the measured standard penetration number (N-value) to get the corrected standard penetration number (N-value), which improves the reliability of the soil strength valuation obtained by the standard penetration test, and makes it more suitable for a variety of geotechnical engineering applications.
