Surface set diamond core drill bits can be used with any core tube and can satisfactorily drill and core in a variety of hard and homogeneous rock formations by varying the type, size and grade of diamond, matrix and lip. In order to prevent excessive carcass wear on the main edges, tungsten carbide inserts are filled at the edges of each waterway. It must be noted that surface-set diamond bits should not be used in broken and loose areas.

Surface set diamond core drill bits are mainly used for drilling medium and high hardness formations. Its main components are large diamond particles, steel body and carbide powder. Diamonds are great for making intricately shaped drills. The diamond is mounted in a drill crown powder metal matrix fused to the steel tool body or shank. The role of the bit crown base on a face-set diamond bit is to hold the diamond tightly in place throughout the life of the bit.
